Indigo Magazine started as an idea, intangible and abstract. It began with a group of friends concerned with getting their stories heard, frustrated at the lack of platforms to showcase new artists in Southeast Asian arts and culture. Many dinners and a few drinks later, certain topics would recur: the wars, exoticism, questions of identity. We wanted a magazine to address these topics, but also move away from the nostalgic, romantic lens through which Southeast Asia is viewed.
During its run, Indigo provided a platform to showcase new voices from Southeast Asian arts and beyond. We believed in looking to the arts to shed light on the nuances of the region and create new narratives. We believed in promoting emergent voices who generate change in Southeast Asian societies.
Indigo published two issues between 2018 and 2019, the first themed Movement, and the second Cities. The magazine championed an emerging generation of writers and artists, aiming to not only debunk but deliver a contemporary Southeast Asia, as seen through the arts.
